How we identify a show from one picture
Popular scenes get shared everywhere - in reviews, recaps, wikis and memes. First we search the web for matching images, which often names the show right away. Then AI studies the frame itself: title cards, channel logos, subtitles, sets, costumes and animation style. Together, that usually pins down the title, and sometimes even the season or episode.
We never identify actors by their faces. The answer comes from image matches and what's on screen, which also means very obscure titles, or scenes that were never posted online, are harder to find.
Tips for a better result
The right screenshot makes all the difference:
- Use the full frame, not a cropped close-up
- Pick a distinctive moment - a famous scene, a title card or an establishing shot
- Leave in any channel logo or watermark in the corner
- Try two or three different frames if the first doesn't work
- If there's dialogue, search a line of it in quotes on Google
Anime, cartoons and video games
Animated frames are often easier to identify because every series has its own art style. For anime, trace.moe is a specialized search engine that can match the exact episode and timestamp. Screenshots from well-known video games can be identified too.
When the tool can't find it
Some clips come from shows that barely exist online. When that happens, people who know film and TV are your best bet. Communities like r/tipofmytongue and r/whatisthismovie on Reddit are remarkably good at naming a title from one screenshot and a short description.
Frequently asked questions
How do I find out what show a picture is from?
Upload the screenshot to the tool above and press Identify show. We combine web image matches with AI scene analysis to name the show or movie.
Can I find a movie from a screenshot?
Yes. The tool works for movies, TV series, anime and many video games. Clear, full-frame screenshots of memorable scenes work best.
Can it tell me the episode?
Sometimes. If the scene is well documented online, the result may mention the season or episode. For anime, trace.moe can often find the exact episode and timestamp.
Does it recognize actors?
No. We don't identify people by their faces. The tool uses web matches and on-screen clues like logos, text and sets instead.
Is it free?
Yes. It's free, works on phone and desktop, and doesn't need an account.
Why is the result wrong?
Similar-looking shows, cropped images or scenes that were never posted online can trip it up. Try a different frame, keep the channel logo in shot, or ask a film community.
