What a reverse face lookup can and cannot tell you

A reverse face lookup takes one photo and searches the web for the same picture and close look-alikes. It can show you every public page that uses that image - which is often enough to tell whether a profile photo is genuine, borrowed, or lifted from someone else's pictures.

What it cannot do is name a stranger. It only finds images that are already published in places search engines can reach. If a photo has never been posted publicly, a lookup will come back empty - and that is by design.

Reverse face lookup for online dating and safety

The most common reason people run a reverse face lookup is to stay safe online. Before meeting someone from a dating app, a quick lookup of their photos can reveal whether the same pictures appear under a different name, on a modelling or stock site, or across dozens of unrelated profiles - all classic catfish warning signs.

Save the profile picture, look it up here, and read the results carefully. No match is not proof someone is real, and a match is not proof they are fake - it is a signal to dig a little deeper before you trust the account.

Look up a face across more than one engine

Different engines index different corners of the web, so a thorough lookup uses several:

• Google - the largest index and the best all-round starting point
• Yandex - widely regarded as the strongest for photos of people and close look-alikes
• Bing Visual Search - a useful second opinion
• TinEye - best for finding the exact same photo and its earliest appearance

Can you look up someone's Facebook or Instagram photos?

Not directly. Photos locked inside private or logged-in areas of social networks are generally not indexed, so a reverse image search cannot reach them. A lookup can only surface pictures that have been published somewhere public and crawled by a search engine.

That is a privacy protection, not a limitation to work around. Do not try to bypass a platform's privacy settings, and only look up images people have shared publicly.

A lookup is not facial recognition

A reverse face lookup matches a picture; it does not identify a person by their biometrics. Facial-recognition systems build a faceprint from someone's features to recognize them in new, unseen photos - this does not do that, and cannot put a name to a face on its own.

Use a lookup responsibly: to verify sources and protect yourself, never to track, profile or harass people who have not consented. Images of people are covered by privacy and biometric laws in many regions, including GDPR and laws such as Illinois' BIPA, so respect people's privacy and your local rules.
